Signs Your Recoil Spring Weight Is Wrong
The malfunctions and brass patterns that tell you the spring is too heavy or too light — and what to do about it.
Too heavy for your ammo
When the spring is overpowering the load, the slide can't finish the job. You'll see stovepipes and failures to eject, brass barely dribbling out by your feet, the slide not locking back on an empty mag, and a sluggish return to battery. That's a spring winning the fight against ammo that isn't making enough energy.
Too light for your ammo
When the spring can't hold the slide back, everything runs fast and hard. Brass gets thrown a mile or scatters everywhere, the cycle feels snappy and violent, and the slide hammers the frame — over time that'll peen and wear the gun. Hot or +P ammo on a light spring is the textbook version.
What to do about it
First make sure it's the spring and not the ammo — run a different, known-good load and see if the problem follows. If it tracks with spring weight, step it in the right direction and shoot it again.
